Log the Twenty-seventh

It seems that for some people, their skills only work in a particular setting. This seems to be the case with Kemby. For, although he be a damn fine navigator when the salt spray is in his hair, he seems to lose his edge down below the surface of the earth.
After brushing ourselves off and mourning the lose of our free rides, we followed Kemby as he led us deeper into the mines of this cursed island. We wove our way along side passages that seemed to have been squeezed out by long cooled rivers of lava. Yes, long cooled, that sets my mind at ease. After much walking and many a turn, Kemby stops in a largish cavern and declares that this be a good place to rest ourselves for the night.
He has a strange idea of rest.
For it seemed that no sooner had I shut my eyes and started dreaming about the loving embrace of bella, the mighty orc mistress, then I was ripped into wakefulness as something ripped pieces of my flesh off!! As I stood up I could see the cavern around me and the others awake and slashing at the air, but I could not see my attackers. The good captain encircled us with a wall of fire and we could see a few strange plant men burst into flames as the wall formed. I was able to summon a blessing from Harrimast and more of the strange plant men became visible around us. Once we could see them they were easily cut down, but not before they had almost stripped the flesh from my bones. So much for a safe haven. Perhaps next time we will not put so much trust in one persons evaluation.

After some time, we could feel dawn breaking above us, although there was no sign of any change deep in the bowels of this cursed island. After petitioning Harrimast for water to slake our thirst we were off once again. After many hours of walking about, nose buggery seemed to be trying to alert little Anna to something on the wall. Eventually we were able to discover that the wall was marked with a stain of banana grease. It seemed that we had finally found a trail after all!
It took much effort and even more walking on our part, but we eventually discovered that the trail led us to areas that seemed to be more inhabited. As we were approaching some more caverns we could hear some sort of strange whispering from ahead of us. With a warning to stay put, captain Bonny disappeared and scouted ahead for us. He returned to inform us that a number of salamander people were guarding the next room, just waiting for an ambush. So, we gave them one!
With the captain invisible and casting spells from behind and the rest of us charging in on them, it seemed like the fight would be quick and easy. Only the cauldron of bubbling lava that was the focal point of the room would prove difficult for us. One of the salamanders stood in the lava and tried to pelt us with balls of the molten death liquid. Lucky was quick on his feet and danced along the edge of the cauldron, with Kemby using the edge as a temporary vantage point to slash at one of them. Even I joined in the game, although once upon the edge, I choose to keep my footing and not tempt fate by moving about. Too bad little Anna had not done the same. Whether it was luck or skill that allowed her to jump that little dog of hers over the cauldron I know not. By it was certainly a cruel fate that decided to put the loose pebble under the dog's foot when she tried again. As she landed upon the flaming soup, I was sure that she would not resurface, but the good captain's magic was protecting us that day and she survived the initial immersion. Kemby made a bold move by leaping upon the lava and scooping her out, even considering that he had some magical protection as well. It was lucky that I had asked Harrimast for the blessing of creating water, for they would have surly been immolated if we had not doused the flames.

It was some time before we had recovered enough to move along. Thankfully the wondrous power of magic will keep little Anna from being permanently marked by the burns she took.
As we continued following the banana grease we found even more evidence that this hellish place had been designed by some foul being whose vision of reality was so warped that it was beyond comprehension. We stepped from a corridor onto a landing over looking another river of lava. Off to one side blocks of stone would break off and float across the river, passing out of site on the other side of the room. It appeared that it was meant for people to leap upon these blocks and jump their way across the room, like some sort of demented frog! This is insanity!!
Thankfully, we have more resources than those damn dirty apes, so we simply allowed little Anna to transform us into birds again and off we flew.
In the cavern across the river, the surprises just kept arriving. As we landed a body came falling from a shaft in the ceiling and landed in a small chasm in the room. A puff of smoke and vapor alerted us to even more lava in the crack. As we looked around, another body followed the first. But our attention was soon distracted. From the lava behind us, a number of flaming shapes arose and started towards us. We should have expected to meet some Fire Elementals in this place, but it was still a shock to see so many at once.
The captain gave the order to fly, so we once again followed Kemby's lead....which, of course, meant that the first turn that we took dropped us into a dead end. As the elementals closed in on us, Lucky managed to dart and weave his way past them and fly up into the crack in the ceiling. The rest of us resumed our normal forms and did battle with the elementals. Once again we would have had our goose cooked if it had not been for the captain's mighty magic. He surrounded us with a dancing cold flame that took most of the bite out of the elementals flaming touch. It was a painful battle, but eventually the elementals had been reduced to small puddles of flaming liquid. As we were finishing off the beasts, Lucky returned from the crack and landed upon a small out cropping. From the crack above we could hear a number of beings talking and just managed to make out the forms of a number of large white apes.
It seems that Lucky had found us the entrance that we had been seeking.

Now we just had to figure out how to climb like a damn dirty ape and all of Black Jenny's secrets would be ours!
